Beige carpet and coffee is the pairing that keeps this trade in work. A dropped mug on a mid-tone nylon twist in a Finchley living room leaves a mark shaped like a country, pale in the middle, dark at the edge, and by the time anybody calls me somebody has already been at it with a cloth and something under the sink. That second bit is usually the real job.

Then there is oil. Coffee carries dissolved and suspended lipids from the bean, and if there was milk in the mug there is fat and protein on top of that. Oil holds soil, which is why an old coffee mark on a beige carpet goes progressively darker over months even in a room nobody walks through.
Third, and this is the one people forget, there is sugar. Sugar dries to a tacky film that grabs every particle carried past it.
Why the edge is darker than the middle
Chromatography, essentially. Liquid spreads outward through the pile and wicks upward as it evaporates, and the dissolved material travels with the water to the drying front. The centre dries first and cleanest, the perimeter concentrates the tannin, and you get a ring.

Which household remedies destroy beige carpet?

Washing-up liquid is the quiet menace. It works, which is the trouble. The mark lifts, the customer is pleased, and the surfactant stays in the pile because there was no rinse, and six weeks later there is a grey circle roughly twice the size of the original coffee spill sitting in the middle of the room.
The Palmers Green sitting room I could not fully fix
Ground floor flat off Green Lanes, N13. Wool-rich twist, pale oatmeal, four years old. A cafetière had gone over on the Sunday and the customer had worked on it for two days with a supermarket oxygen stain remover, reapplying because it “nearly worked”.
By the time I arrived the tannin was gone. What was left was a bleached patch about the size of a dinner plate, cream against oatmeal, with a faint brown halo outside it where the product had run out of strength. Dye loss is not a cleaning problem. It is a colour problem, and the only routes are re-dyeing by hand or a bonded insert cut from a cupboard offcut.
I re-dyed it. It is a good match and I know exactly where it is, and so does she.
What removes coffee tannin safely?
Sequence, mostly. The chemistry is unremarkable and the order it goes on in decides everything.
Extract first. A wet vacuum, or failing that a white towel and body weight, removing as much liquid as physically comes out before any product touches the fibre. Anything you add now has to be removed later, and every millilitre of coffee you take out mechanically is a millilitre nobody has to treat chemically.
Then a mild detergent stage for the oil and sugar, at neutral to slightly alkaline pH, worked gently with a white towel rather than a brush. This lifts the greasy fraction that would otherwise sit over the tannin and block the acid stage from reaching it.
Then the tannin remover proper, which is an acid – typically oxalic, citric or a blend, at a low pH. Acid breaks the bond between the tannin and the fibre and returns the colour to solution. It works on wool and it works on cellulosic backings, and it is safe on almost every carpet dye system you will meet in a domestic setting because acid dyes are already living in an acid environment.
Then rinse. Properly, with an acid rinse and extraction, until nothing further comes up on a white towel.

Heat, dwell time and the thing that goes wrong

Cool water, extract, blot inward, repeat, no product at all. On nylon or polypropylene, caught inside the hour, plain water and patience get most of it and there is nothing for me to add worth a call-out charge.
Where I do want the call is wool, milk, anything more than a day old, and anything where somebody has already applied a product. That last category is half my spot work and it is entirely avoidable.

On a bad one I will lay a folded white towel over the damp patch weighted with a couple of books, which draws the wicking moisture into the towel instead of to the pile tips.
